Cleaning household surfaces, such as kitchen worktops and bathrooms
White vinegar is a powerful natural disinfectant. It can be used on any household surface: floors, tiles, glass…
White vinegar can eliminate bacteria, fungal growth, mould and other kinds of organisms that cause stains and unpleasant smells. For example, it is especially useful for disinfecting and cleaning chopping boards, above all those made of wood.
Indeed, it can also be used to eliminate odours from damp mops.
To use it as a multi-use cleaner mix 1 cup of white vinegar with half a cup of water and place the mixture in a spray bottle. Apply directly to the surface to be cleaned.
You can also apply it undiluted onto the surface to be cleaned.
WARNING! Do not use on delicate surfaces such as terrazzo, marble and granite.
Cleaning and polishing stainless steel surfaces (worktops, induction hobs, taps…)
A mixture of 1 part vinegar with 2 parts water can be used to clean any stainless steel surface, such as grill pans, shower heads or ceramic hobs.
Cleaning and disinfecting the inside of washing machines and dishwashers
For maintenance cleaning, when the dishwasher is full and ready to be started, first spray the interior with white vinegar using a spray.
If the dishwasher is very dirty, mix 2 litres of water with 2 cups of vinegar in a bucket. With the help of a gentle scouring pad, clean the dishwasher’s walls and racks. It will soon look brand new again.
For brighter shinier tableware, you can add a squirt of vinegar to each wash cycle. By doing so we also ensure that the machine remains clean and disinfected for longer.
To clean your washing machine’s drum all you need to do is add a ½ cup of cleaning vinegar – if you do not have any, use whatever vinegar you have to hand – to the detergent and fabric softener dispensers. Then, start the washing machine on a normal wash cycle at 30ºC or more, always ensure the washing machine is empty.
When the programme finishes, if there is any strange smell or residue, you can add vinegar directly to the drum, and wipe it down with a cloth or scouring pad. Then, set the washing machine on another normal wash cycle with more vinegar.
Cleaning, removing grease and polishing ovens and microwaves
Cleaning the oven with cleaning vinegar is one of the most popular domestic DIY tips to be found on the Internet. To do so, first remove the oven shelves and baking trays (leave them to soak in the sink with a solution of water and vinegar) and apply the vinegar so that it can set to work.
To clean the inside of the oven, mix hot water and vinegar in equal parts. Spray the mixture on the walls of the oven, including the door. Let the mixture act for 15 to 20 minutes so that the grease softens and becomes easier to remove (the time depends on how long the grease has been there).
Removing mould and bacteria
Spray white vinegar onto mould stains. Leave it to work for a few minutes and clean with a cloth, but without rinsing it off.
Neutralising odours (pets, mop. washing machine and dishwasher…)
White vinegar is very effective at eliminating unpleasant smells produced by bacteria and damp. To do, so fill a plastic receptacle with white vinegar and cover it with cling film. Make a few holes in the film and leave it in the room you wish to deodorise and leave it to work overnight.
If you want to eliminate the smell of dog pee, apply the vinegar as a smell neutraliser: just mix 1 part vinegar with 1 part hot water in a spray bottle. Apply to the spot where the dog has urinated and leave it to act for 20 minutes. Then, wipe it up with absorbent paper and leave it to dry.
This vinegar also neutralises unpleasant smells from clothes, yellow stains from perspiration, as well as unpleasant smells in the freezer and food storage containers you want to reuse, such as glass jars.
Removing limescale from objects and surfaces (glass partitions, toilets, draining boards, glasses and wine glasses…)
To remove limescale from taps, apply the vinegar on a clean cloth and rub it onto the limescale stains. Besides removing the stains, the vinegar will revive their natural shine.
To remove limescale from glass bathroom partitions mix 2 parts white vinegar and 2 parts hot water. Place the mixture in a spray bottle and apply to the partition. Leave it to work for 20 minutes and scrub the stained surface. Remove any residue with a cloth.
Stainless steel draining boards are very sensitive to limescale, so it is necessary to clean them with water and soap, or water and vinegar on a daily basis! To avoid the accumulation of limescale: do not forget to dry the draining board with a soft cloth. To remove limescale: hot white vinegar is perfect. Leave it to work for 20 minutes and then rinse it with water.
To eliminate limescale from glasses and wine glasses, mix white vinegar and water in equal parts in a washing-up bowl. Place the glasses to be polished in the mixture and leave them to soak for an hour. Then wipe them dry with kitchen paper or a napkin. If you prefer, you can soak a washing-up cloth with white vinegar and then polish the glasses or wine glasses until they shine like new.
